Figure Out What You Want To Be When You Grow Up

A restaurant I went to the other evening (yes, I do like to eat out, although I have been known to cook a pretty good meal from time to time) provided me with todays business lesson from the field. The restaurant was fine, not great, but okay, but the thing that stuck with me the most was I didn’t really know how to describe it. I couldn’t decide if it was a sports bar, a fine restaurant, or just your casual cafe to grab something to eat and drink. A visit to the website didn’t necessarily shed any new light on the subject either. I’t made me think they didn’t know what they knew they wanted to be when they grew up. It also brings to mind the valuable marketing lesson, “When you market to everyone, you market to no one.” So decide what you want to be and who your customer is. And then make it all about them.
